Materials
Plant breeding and pollen production are activities which require precise and certain conditions. As a result we’ve tailored our products to be able to provide consistent, reliable performance; a major way in which we achieve this is through the materials we use.

- Non-woven polyester: this is made by pressing together polyester fibres into a matt of material, which means that it has no regular or uniform perforations. The result is that whilst very small particles, such as air and light, can glide between the fibres, larger particles such as pollen grains become tangled in the randomly formed polyester mesh;
- Laboratory testing: an important consideration is that the random nature of the material prevents any guarantee of consistency from one batch of material to another. As a result, PBS submit the material they use to careful testing in order to ensure that it delivers the qualities required;
- Continuous improvement: PBS is a company built on an ethic of innovation – new methods and materials are always under review in order to find ways of taking our products to the next level.
As well as providing an effective barrier to pollen, our materials are also designed to be practical for usage in any plant breeding programme:
- Resistant to water absorption; maintains its shape when wet. Can withstand exposure to intense heat and strong light;
- Strong, resistant to tearing and abrasion;
- Flexible enough to gather and tie around stems and branches;
- Re-usable – can be cleaned and used again the next season.
